The International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) Oceania Region and the Children’s and Young Adult Literature Special Interest Group are proud to partner with the School Library Association of Victoria (SLAV), the School Library Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (SLANZA) and the Charles Sturt University’s Children’s Librarianship Specialisation to share and celebrate youth literature from the area.

Join experts from Australia, New Zealand, and Pasifika for titles, resources, and ideas to develop a stronger collection representing the rich variety of people and perspectives in Oceania. Speakers include:

  • Dr Belle Alderman, AM, Emeritus Professor of Children's Literature and Director of the National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature will discuss their Cultural Diversity database and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Resource to help teacher librarians build authentic collections representative of Australia.

  • Dr Nicola Daly is a sociolinguist and Associate Professor in the Division of Education at the University of Waikato, New Zealand where she teaches children’s literature. Nicola has been researching dual language picturebooks for the last 15 years, exploring their linguistic landscape and how they can be used to support or disrupt existing language hierarchies. In this presentation, entitled, E toru ngā reo: Multiligual picturebooks in Aotearoa, she will give an overview of the different ways that English, Māori and NZSL are present in picturebooks in Aotearoa, and discuss the potential of picturebooks as a source for encouraging critical discussions around language beliefs and attitudes.

  • The Reading Warrior, David Riley, will share how he works with Pasifika communities to create books for young people in English and in their home languages.

A link for the event and reminders will be sent closer to the date.

The session will be recorded for later viewing as well so if you are unable to attend in real time, please register and you will get the recording link after the presentation.
