A is for ARCHIVING

An online session aimed at exploring the intersection of library and archival practices. 

Session Overview

Suitable for both beginners and those looking to enhance existing collections, this session will address common questions about school archives, including what materials to keep, storage methods, and best practices. 

Learn about:

  • Identifying and preserving important school records and memorabilia
  • Approaches to physical and digital archiving
  • Managing access and understanding provenance
  • Practical starting points for school archiving

Speakers

  • Dr. Sindiso Bhebhe is currently a lecturer in the School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt University and brings extensive experience to this session, including 12 years of experience as an archivist at the National Archives of Zimbabwe. His research focuses on community archives, and he holds a doctorate in Information Studies from the University of South Africa, where he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Kate Sullivan, Manager of Records and Mail Services at the Department of Education will speak on transferring historical records to State archives via the "Schools Records Management Program"
  • Catherine Hall,  BA, GradDipSci (Archives & Records), Aust Society of School Archivists will speak on "School Archives - The Reality". Catherine has over 20 years experience in Archives and Record Management and is currently the College Archivist for Xavier College. She oversees a diverse portfolio including current and and historical staff and student records, a digital sound and film archive and a divergent collection of physical materials including uniforms, photographs and sporting equipment. She is currently the National Convenor of the Australian Society of Archivists Special Interest Group – School Archives. 

Time will be allocated at the end of the session for questions and discussion. Join us to explore how school librarians can effectively preserve and manage their school's historical materials.
